In Theatre in the Round’s current production of “A Murder Is Announced,” Wendy Freshman falls more toward the daffy end of that spectrum. But while she makes the character sweet and amusing, she plays her with a sly wit that makes the sleuth genuinely engaging.

The show runs nearly three hours (including intermissions) and could have been trimmed to a tauter two acts. However, anyone who craves a puzzle most likely will find this “Murder” an amusing way to kill an evening.
