“I sat down to write the greatest book ever written, which turned out to be a bit of a problem,” Penny recalls on the line from her Montreal home. “I suffered writer’s block for about five years. It was kind of humiliating. Now, I always tell aspiring writers that if you finally decide you are going to write that novel, do not announce it on CBC Radio.
“Then one day I looked at my bedside table and saw that it was piled high with Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Josephine Tey and all these amazing golden-age crime and mystery writers. I thought, `I’m trying to write the wrong book. I’m just going to write a book that I would love to read.'” (TheStar)
