A polêmica sobre a “nova aventura” de Hercule Poirot

A nota é curta e direta, na verdade uma carta direcionada ao jornal The Telegraph sobre o “novo romance de Hercule Poirot”, a respeito do qual falamos aqui no A Casa Torta no post The Guardian e o “novo” Poirot:

Agatha Christie would be turning in her grave at the announcement that there is to be a new Poirot novel (report, September 4).

While I am sure Sophie Hannah will do an excellent job, the reason that Agatha Christie killed off her detective in Curtain was to prevent any such future spin-offs after her death. During her lifetime, Agatha Christie’s daughter Rosalind fervently protected the integrity of her mother’s work. It is sad that such integrity no longer appears to be the cornerstone of Agatha Christie Ltd.

RJ: Feira de Livros Usados em setembro de 2013

Como ainda não pude ir ao Centro do Rio para conferir, as informações sobre a tradicional feira de livros usados do Rio de Janeiro ainda são conflitantes. O site da AbraLivros tem 2 informações diferentes:

– Na seção “Feiras e Eventos”, a agenda é:

“Centro (Largo da Carioca) – Setembro – 30 estandes”

– Na seção “Noticias”, na entrada do site, o texto [de 05.09.2013] é:

“A partir do dia 10/09 até o dia 10/10, estaremos com a feira na Praça XV. Funcionando sempre de segunda a sexta-feira até as 20:00 h, aos sábados até 14:00 h, contamos com a sua presença.”

O jeito é conferir. E quem souber com certeza nos avise, para que possamos corrigir aqui no post.

Vale lembrar que, para os fãs de Agatha, há sempre barracas com livros que variam entre 5 e 15 reais, incluindo edições do Círculo do Livro em ótimo estado de conservação.

Um Gato Entre os Pombos no Youtube

Considero “Um Gato Entre os Pombos” um dos melhores livros de Agatha Christie. Foi também o primeiro livro dela que li, quando nem conhecia direito ainda a Dama do Mistério e do Suspense, em idos 1982. Achei somente hoje um link do Youtube [publicado em agosto de 2013] que contém uma adaptação desta grande obra, com legendas. Ainda nem assisti, mas desde já deixo o endereço:

The Guardian e o “novo” Poirot

Abaixo, trecho da matéria publicada em 04 de setembro de 2013 no “The Guardian”, escrita por John Sutherland com o título de “Exhuming Poirot is disrespectful towards Agatha Christie’s careful burial”. O final é bem enfático: “But please, let Dame Agatha, and Hercule, rest in peace. Having said that, of course I’ll download it 30 seconds after it comes out in 2014.”. Confira:

… however good Sophie Hannah’s announced post-mortem sequel turns out to be.

The reason I hate the idea of this boiled-over Agatha Christie is that the story of the “last Poirot” is so moving, and such a credit to the queen of crime as a person. The new book (and let’s face it, money is the driving motive) will muddy one’s sense of the dignified way she wrapped up the life of Hercule Poirot.

The long birth of Christie’s last Poirot novel, the detective’s curtain call, is well known. In the early days of world war two, Christie (who had done her bit as a nurse in the first world war), like many other brave Londoners, refused to leave the capital, while at the same time fully realising that she might die in the Blitz.

It was a point of honour. In those uneasy months it must have seemed if not the end of the world, then the end of old England – her world. The England, that is, of Styles and St Mary Mead, as celebrated in the genteel “tea-cosy” crime fiction of which, by 1939, she was the acknowledged monarch. There were others – Elizabeth Bowen, Stephen Spender, Virginia Woolf (a band of patriot authors chronicled in Lara Feigel’s Love Charm of Bombs), who declined to follow Aldous Huxley, Christopher Isherwood and WH Auden to the safety of America. Christie was certainly internationally famous enough to have cut and run.
